Forgot how nice Galway was. On a recent visit on a certain young man’s 9th Birthday to see some art at the wonderful Festival of Art, we were absorbed into a buzzing, colourful, happy city, to while away a couple of hours. It was a warm sunny day in the west, we were suitably dressed and ready to soak it all up.
Down the back streets we went, happening upon Vintage Clothing Shops, Kebab stops and mine artists. The smell of food everywhere, garlic and falafel, and sushi in the market. Stopped at Sherridan’s for cheese and olives, bought ice-cream from a REAL sweet shop, and got my eyebrows threaded by a Chinese woman with red lipstick, much to the horror of the Birthday boy…
Then to lunch in the Mill Cafe/Restaurant, Proper Fish and chips, Calamari and bacon salad pour moi, and deep fried prawns for the youngest member of the possy. No complaints, great view through a large semi-circle window, over looking the River, (as above) and a welcome hideaway from the city heat.
Down Shop Street, more art, sand sculpture of Sow with piglets!!, traditional Irish music, played beautifully by Chinese students. More shopping and a play in the park with the pigeons, Nerf guns and rubber bullets, you get the picture…..Counted at least 3 places I want to go back to eat in, and it’s only an hour from home, with some wicked shops and food places, cool music venues and very colourful, shiny , happy people, go Galway.
